Proceeds: As part of our commitment to social justice and community engagement, this is a charity 5k fundraiser event to support the important and impactful work undertaken by Last Prisoner Project. This organization fights criminal injustice and reimagines drug policy. Its mission is simple: to free the tens of thousands of drug war prisoners, incarcerated for cannabis-related offenses, while thousands of other individuals are profiting off the cannabis industry. All money raised will be donated directly to the Last Prisoner Project after offsetting the costs for hosting the event. Through intervention, advocacy, and awareness campaigns, Last Prisoner Project works to redress the past and continuing harms of these unjust laws and policies. As the United States moves away from the criminalization of cannabis, and Michigan has legalized cannabis, we will donate all the money raised directly to Last Prisoner Project after offsetting the costs for hosting the event.
Meet the team: We are a group of future Spartan attorneys at Michigan State University: College of Law. We are comprised of six student organizations working together with the support of Student Bar Association to raise money for Last Prisoner Project: The International Cannabis Bar Association - MSU Student Chapter, The Lawyers for Active Wellness Legion, Black Law Students Association, Criminal Defense Association, ACLU Michigan State University, and Future Lawyers Against Gun Violence. We, as future attorneys, dedicated to justice, advocacy, and education, are driven to give back to our community and fight for those still incarcerated for an activity which is now legal in the state of Michigan.
Raffle: Every participant will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win items from Last Prisoner Project and our Sponsors! Additional raffle tickets may be purchased at check-in. Winners will be announced at the end of the race and must be present.
