An estimated 6.5 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease. In North Carolina alone, around 369,000 caregivers are providing more than 533 million hours of unpaid care each year. This care values around $8 billion annually and the need is expected to increase. These caregivers face significant emotional, physical and health-related challenges as a result of their caregiving. Nearly all Alzheimer’s or dementia caregivers have reported experiencing sadness, anxiety, loneliness, or exhaustion at some point in their caregiving journey. Because they are at an increased risk for burnout, seeking help and support is crucial. In addition, it is estimated that dementia caregivers bear nearly twice the average out-of-pocket costs of non-dementia caregivers, having to cover medical care, personal care and housing expenses for the individual with dementia. The increased costs make it even more difficult for some to obtain help.
The annual “Run to Remember” 5K and Fun Run is meant to not only honor and remember our loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, but to raise additional funding to support the growing number of family caregivers in Northeast North Carolina. Funding will be used towards respite care, giving caregivers the opportunity to take a break from their caregiving duties, giving them time to rest, travel or attend to other things. The funding will directly impact caregivers in the region served by the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on Aging, including the counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington.
